Professor Dick Oepkes is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist from Leiden, The Netherlands. He trained at the University of Utrecht and the University of Leiden. From 1999-2001, he was Fellow Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Toronto, Canada. Since 2001, he is the head of the Fetal Medicine Section of the Leiden University Medical Center, which is the National Center for Fetal Therapy. In 2012, he was appointed full professor in Fetal Therapy. Professor Oepkes is author of more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and editor of 4 textbooks in Fetal Medicine. He supervised more than 20 PhD students. In 2017, he was awarded Fellow of the RCOG.

His has an interest in teaching invasive procedures including fetoscopic operations, using realistic simulator models (https://www.fetalcareacademy.org). His research interests are red cell- and platelet alloimmunization (Rh-disease and FNAIT), monochorionic twin complications (his team first described TAPS), fetal lung lesions and fetal cardiac interventions. He was involved in early studies and implementation of cell-free DNA screening for Down syndrome, which is available for all pregnant women in The Netherlands, sponsored by the government. He is co-PI of an EU funded study to treat fetal osteogenesis imperfect by fetal stem cell infusion. His center is involved in many international multicentre studies in fetal medicine.
